I have decided to go back to school- again (I know, the professional student)- to get my elementary education teacher credentials. I am doing an online program recommended by the licensing board through Western Governor's University, and I am hoping that with all my prior credits, the program won't take as long as it takes others.
Being a stay-at-home Mom has been kinda fun, but I need more in my life than hobbies. I'm at a point in my life where I feel the need to give back and do something meaningful. When I considered what I could do in terms of profession, my choices are limited due to the thorn in my side of carpal tunnel in both hands. So I needed to find something that I enjoyed, was meaningful, and still give me time to raise Chris and not miss out on his life moments.
I enjoy volunteering in the school, the PTO, the Cub Scouts....so I felt the direction was pretty clear in what profession was right for me. I am getting my substitute teaching license while I am working on my program as well. I have a couple of busy months ahead of me, but I am really looking forward to the challenge. David supports my decisions and that means the world to me.
Funny "Chris Story" for you......When I told him that I was becoming a teacher, he said, "Mom, Mrs. Riley says that teaching is hard. You have to do a million things while you are teaching kids. You have to climb ropes. You have to lift heavy things. You can't do that with your hands." I said, "Chris, those things are important if I were going to be a PE teacher." If you know Chris at all, you know he has an answer for everything (like his Dad), so my comment didn't phase him. He said, "Mrs. Baskin says that PE is really fun. Maybe you should become a PE teacher and not do the rope climbing." This may not be as funny as some of his other stories, but it was comical to sit and have this conversation with a 7 year old. In some ways, he was trying to talk me out of becoming a teacher, and when he realized he couldn't do that, he tried to protect me by telling me what teaching areas are hard or fun. He's got a huge heart, and he worries about his mom. How can a 7 year old be that deep? When I was 7, all I was concerned about was Barbies! Christopher is a very very special little boy, and the love of my life.
Until next time
